The best way to answer this question is to start by clarifying and differentiating two misunderstood concepts.
Salvation isn’t the same thing as giving your life to Christ. Salvation is receiving the life of Christ. We really had nothing to give in the first place as we were already dead in sin so what we did was to receive his life to live again. John 1:12 says ‘But as many as RECEIVED HIM, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe in his name’.
Giving your life to Christ, on the other hand, is what we do after we have received His life. We in turn commit, devote and consecrate our lives to him in service. That is what it means to give your life to Christ. Because He gave, we can now give. Paul explains this best in 2 Corinthians 8:5 where he said ‘And this they did, not as we hoped, but first GAVE THEIR OWN SELVES TO THE LORD, and unto us by the will of God’.
In concise terms, salvation (being born again) is receiving the life of God. While the commitment, devotion and consecration that comes after salvation is the practice of giving your life to Him – which is something that, as believers, we should do on a daily basis.
To answer the question of how many times we can be born again, it is important to note that salvation or being born again isn’t something we do every day. Salvation is done once and not repeatedly. ‘Once saved, Always saved’ as some men of God would say. To think otherwise is to belittle the sacrifice of Jesus as though it can be done and undone. John 10:28 says ‘And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.’ Jesus’ work is perfect and cannot be undone. It is once and forever.
Since we have a good understanding of what it means to be born again, we can now proceed to answer the question of how many times you should give your life to Christ. We must not confuse this with going out for an altarcall over and over again. It simply means giving yourself over to the Lord for His work. It isn’t so much about how many times because at different times, we might have to remind ourselves of this and walk in the reality of who we are. This isn’t the renewal of your salvation as salvation cannot be renewed. It is simply laying down your life for the sake of the gospel as you have been called to do.
Till next time,
Rest in the finished work of Christ which is your salvation
